I have always viewed my art as the means of entry into a secret magical world. Surfaces and textures have compelled me on this journey. Stone and clay have presented challenges daring me to both reveal and exploit their properties.
In Italy, working with century old quarries I have been inspired by architecture and sculpture that are ever enduring. Stone has allowed for the realization of forms that I am honored to now see placed in museums.
From my studio in New York I have pushed out clay as a medium seeking to stretch it beyond traditional boundaries. The thrill of discovery, of taking something organic and infusing it with other matter, has allowed for an experience akin to alchemy. Watching silver bubble to the surface and discovering a new expression of clay has been for me a step into the mystery of the planet’s evolution. Heat and fire have compelled the formation of new properties whether precious or semi precious in rock. The kiln invites melding science with aesthetics.
My forms are inspired by the natural world, the organic, abstract or Asian culture. I have pursued various mediums in seeking to mirror age old glazing techniques or mastery of Raku. This presents an ongoing exploration of matter both solid and liquid.
Living in a city rich with museums and galleries, I am fortunate to be surrounded by a constant influx of diverse art practices, cultural influences, and artistic techniques. These encounters inspire and challenge me to look beyond the visible, urging the realization of what is unseen. For me, art-making is an ongoing journey—an exploration into, and beyond, the layers of life and the universe.
